We wish to thank our sponsors for this event, Campbells Prime Meat Ltd., for their generous help.

Thanks also to Duncan Cursiter for his good-humoured and professional directing of the main pairs and teams events, Margo Cursiter for directing the novice pairs, and Cad Delworth for scoring the pairs. And of course, thanks to Julie Choudhury and her team for the usual delicious food!

Harrower Cup: No Play On Tuesday 30 November

Given the unusually poor weather at the moment, we have taken the decision to postpone the fifth round of play to a later date. Harrower TD Jim Herbert will post a notice in the Club tomorrow (Tuesday) detailing the enforced changes to the schedule; and will contact team captains to inform them individually of the revised plans.

Apologies to all concerned; we hope you will understand that the current continuing snowfall left us little choice but to postpone this week's round of play.

Derek Sanders Wins Commonwealth Gold

We are delighted to announce that the six members of the Scotland team—including Carlton member Derek Sanders—have won Gold medals at the Commonwealth Games Bridge Championship in Delhi today.

Although the Indian Hemant Jalan team beat Scotland in the teams final by 96 IMPs to 48, Hemant Jalan are not a national team and thus not eligible for medals.

Betty Blake: In Memoriam

Wednesday Evening Classes—An Important Announcement

The Carlton Bridge Club sincerely apologises for the confusion regarding the Wednesday evening Post-beginners classes, which was due to circumstances beyond our control.

The Wednesday evening classes will re-commence at 7.00 pm on Wednesday 3 November with Clare Gray. Dee Harley, who previously taught this class, is away playing in the World Championship. The resumed lessons will begin with a revision of Lesson 31.

In the meantime, whilst the class is without a teacher, we will instead run a Beginners' tournament on Wednesday evenings at 7.00 pm, to which all students are cordially invited to attend. The first of these tournaments will be held on on Wednesday 29 September.

Students are of course also welcome to attend the Post-beginners classes with Elizabeth Peckham at 1.30 pm on Wednesday afternoons.

6 September 2010

Harrower Cup

This year's Harrower Cup starts on Tuesday 5 October and continues on alternate Tuesday evenings. The Harrower is our teams-of-four event for players of District Master rank or below, and if you've never played in one before, it's a great introduction to this type of teams event.

What's In A Name?

If you are a scorer or TD at Club events using BridgePads, please make the time EARLY in the event to check that all player names have been entered. If ScoreBridge shows the message Name entry is incomplete on the Wireless Control page after all the BridgePads have been started, add any missing names manually.

If two or more pairs' names are blank at the end, the Results page may severely 'misbehave.' You have been warned!

2 July 2010

Cross Links

We have updated the Club Competitions and Club Competition Results pages so that the pages are cross-linked.

In other words, you can now click an event name on the Club Competition Results page to see its description on the Club Competitions page; and the Club Competitions page now contains links to each event's results on the Club Competition Results page.

New BridgePads Have Arrived

Our new batch of fifteen BridgePads arrived today and are ready for use immediately. All TDs and scorers please note that there are different procedures to follow if you are scoring two simultaneous events using BridgePads. There is a printed page (from the ScoreBridge Help file) which explains this, and we plan to produce a new 'advanced' ScoreBridge manual in the near future which will illustrate the entire process with screenshots.

26 March 2010

BridgePads: More, Please!

We're very happy to say that given the continuing success of our BridgePad wireless scoring terminals, the Board have approved the purchase of another fifteen, which will bring the total number of BridgePads owned by the Carlton to thirty. We expect delivery of the new 'Pads' at the end of April.

With thirty 'Pads' available, we can use BridgePads to score two 'biggish' events at the same time; until now, the limiting factor has always been the number of 'Pads.' This means that in the near future, we will (for example) be able to use BridgePads for both the 'regular' Friday tournament and a 'Regulars and Novices' event held on the same evening.

DID YOU KNOW?
After the end of play at your table, you can see any pair's percentage.
After the last board has been reviewed, press 2 (Request Game Summary), then follow the on-screen instructions.
NOTE: If any rounds are dropped at the end, you won't see the little 'menu' which allows you to do this: sorry!

26 March 2010

Regulars and Novices moves to Tuesdays

Our popular Regulars and Novices tournament will be held on the last TUESDAY of each month from now on (moving from Fridays). We hope that this will encourage even more 'regulars' to support our ever-growing 'posse' of new players now that the event does not clash with our usual Friday evening tournament.

If you are an experienced Carlton member, please sign up on the blue form on the notice board beside the bar.

25 March 2010

Farewell, Saturday Tournaments

At their meeting tonight, it was with some regret that the Board decided to discontinue our efforts to run a monthly tournament on a Saturday evening. It has become increasingly obvious that there is not enough interest to justify this event.

We would like to thank those members who supported this trial tournament regularly since its inception in October 2008, and who made those evenings such sociable occasions.

9 March 2010

Correction to Thursday Evening Results for 4 March

Apologies to all concerned for the incorrect results which were posted for this tournament! The corrected results have been posted both here and on the Club notice board. Please let us know if the results are still incorrect.

Jesner/Johnston/Kennedy Pairs: ED Heats at the Carlton

The Carlton are hosting the East District heats of this year's Jesner, Johnston, and Kennedy Pairs on Sunday 28 March. These are simultaneous SBU events which are scored across the field, with the same boards being played in each SBU District's heat. Each event has different entry qualifications, as follows:

The Carlton heats will be directed by Ian Macaulay and scored by Cad Delworth. To enter, please contact our Chairman, Jane Miller. The entry fee is £3 per player plus table money, collected at the event. We look forward to seeing you there!

2 February 2010

Car Park Temporary Closure (UPDATE)

This work will now take place on Thursday and Friday the 11th and 12th of February, and NOT on the 4th and 5th of February as originally planned.

29 January 2010

Car Park Temporary Closure

The entrance to the Club's car park is being repaired, therefore there will be no vehicular access to the car park next Thursday and Friday, the 4th and 5th of February.

We remind you that Lothian Buses 8, 23, and 27 stop in Inverleith Row; and buses 1, 14, and 21 stop in Ferry Road. There is a footpath from Ferry Road which runs alongside the Goldenacre playing fields to the club entrance.

Thursday afternoon players please note: car drivers will not be charged table money.

New Year, New Calendar…

Finally (!), the online version of the Carlton Calendar for 2009–10 is available.

We've checked all the dates and venues against the calendars and event listings on the SBU and ED sites, so where there are disagreements with the printed Carlton diary, the online Calendar takes precedence. That said, please do tell us if you notice any errors or inaccuracies.

It's A Date!

Starting this year, we're adding a date above each News item, showing you when it was posted on the site. We hope you will find this new feature useful.

Beginners Become New Players

We have made another minor change to this Web site. The two Results pages for Beginners and New Players have been combined into a single page, and the Events page previously named Beginners Tournaments has been renamed New Players Tournaments to match.

Beginner's Classes: A Note From Dee Harley

Dee's evening classes resume after the Xmas and New Year break on Wednesday 6 January 2010 with a review of lessons 1–10. Lessons 11–20 will start from 13 January 2010.

Carlton Specsavers Handicap Congress 2009

We all thoroughly enjoyed this year's Congress, which was once again generously supported by Specsavers North Bridge branch in Edinburgh. Our special thanks also go to:

All the results are available on our main Results page.

In total, we had 44 pairs in the main Congress Pairs; eight pairs in each of the Next Steps and No Fears events; and nineteen Teams in the Congress Teams. We hope to welcome even MORE of you to next year's Congress!

Web Site Changes

We've added a new page listing our expanded programme of events for beginners and novices: you'll find it in the Events menu above.

Would you like to hire a room at the Carlton? Another new page lists our facilities: click Room Hire in the menu.

Finally, we've moved the link to our Photo Gallery under the Links menu.

BridgePads: Here To Stay!

Our trial of the BridgePad wireless scoring system was so successful that we have purchased the 15 units we had on trial. Thanks to all members and visitors for their feedback during the trial, especially the players in the Russell Cup who completed our Survey form.

We are organising BridgePad training sessions for TDs and scorers: see the details above!

NEW VERSION Of ScoreBridge Guide Is Available

For some months now, we've been using the latest R9 version of ScoreBridge.
We have now produced a new version of our Beginner's Guide to ScoreBridge to match.

To view or print the new version, click here.

BridgePad Training for Scorers and TDs

Cad Delworth will be holding an informal training session for all Club TDs and scorers on Tuesday 13 October at 7.00 pm. The session will last roughly an hour and a half, and all TDs and scorers who were not able to come to the earlier Saturday session are strongly encouraged to attend.

The session will comprise revision on ScoreBridge, followed by BridgePad procedures (with special emphasis on resolving problems encountered at the table).

The training session is free of charge. If you wish to attend, please write your name on the notice which is displayed on the Club notice boards.

A further session may be arranged at a later date if there is sufficient demand.

New Players Tournament Is 'On Hold'

Due to low numbers during the current holiday season, the Friday New Players tournament is 'on hold' and will not be run again until October. We'll post details here when the New Players tournament is starting up again.

The usual Friday tournament is unaffected, and anyone who would like to play on Friday is very welcome to join us. Recently, pairs from the New Players have joined us in the 'main room' and they seemed (?) to enjoy the experience!

Learn The Basics Of Bridge In A Day—Saturday 5 September 2009

Following the success of last year's event, we once again invite YOU to learn the basics of bridge in a friendly, relaxed all-day session at our purpose-built premises. For full details, click here!

THREE IN A ROW!

Despite our Chairman, Jane Miller, being very nervous beforehand, we are delighted to report that at the annual Melville v Carlton match on Wednesday 13th May 2009, the Carlton players were victorious for the third time in the past three years!

Our commiserations once again this year to all our friends at the Melville.

Web Site Re-Design

No doubt you have already noticed the general re-design of this site?

We've listened to all your suggestions for improvements, like moving our sponsors' logos to the banner, and changing the 'plaque' menu to a space-saving set of buttons just below the banner.

We hope you find these changes help you view the site: please do let us know what you think!

New Players And Beginners Tournaments

We welcome all new players to a new weekly tournament, run every FRIDAY night in addition to our usual Friday tournament. The New Players tournament will be run every Friday, except when a Regulars And Novices tournament is taking place (the second Friday in each month from October to June).

All players will pay standard table money (£3.50 per player) which includes a free printed copy of the hands you've played. Come along with a partner, or come on your own and we'll match you up with someone.

This is your chance to put into practice everything you've already learned from all those lessons you have been attending, and all the books you have been reading! We look forward to seeing you.

We also run a Beginners' Tournament on the last Friday of each month. Table money is £4 per person and there is an analysis of the first 12 hands. Partners can be arranged but you MUST let the director know in advance. There are chocolate prizes for the best scores!
To enter or enquire about the Beginners Tournament, please send an e-mail to junemorrison@talktalk.net.

New Copier/Printer … and Goodbye Old Friend!

We are now the proud owners of a brand new photocopier/laser printer. Our new machine can make double-sided copies, AND it copies much more quickly than our previous Canon photocopier. The Canon photocopier will remain available in Room 2 for general use.

The new copier also doubles as printer for our laptop (those using our dealing machine, please note!), replacing our Lexmark printer which is being kept as a spare. We've updated the dealing machine instructions to take account of the new printer.

It's not just the Lexmark printer which has been retired. After some months of non-use, our old computer has finally been recycled, making a surprising amount of room in the Office! We couldn't resist taking a farewell picture of the old 386 in full working order, as a souvenir. For the benefit of our younger viewers, what you see on its screen is Windows for Workgroups 3.11 (!).

Latest Results Page Changes

We've been busy again, and we've made more changes to our Results pages.

Novices and Regulars Tournaments 2009

These popular events pair a 'regular' Carlton member with a 'novice' player, and are once again proving successful. These tournaments are held every fourth Friday night, in addition to the regular Friday evening match-pointed tournament. At the end of the 'season,' there are special prizes for the best-performing pairs.

We've updated our Beginners Results page so that these events will now appear there, as well as in the main Results pages.

Club Competitions Results Page

In response to requests from several members, we recently changed our Results pages so that you immediately go to the Recent Results page.

Don't forget that if you want to see the results or current state of play in a Club competition (such as the Bill Brown), there is a the link on what is now the 'main' Results page to the complete list of Club competition results and rankings.

We've recently updated the Competitions results page to include all the available 2009 results.

Beginners Xmas Party and Teams Competition

On December 2 2008, eight teams of four enjoyed a suitably festive meal and their first experience of competitive bridge. Thanks to Gerry Girvan for taking the photos, and to Elizabeth Peckham for directing the event!

The tournament was won by Kate Aggett, Alison Allan, Maureen Revans, and their captain Rosemary Steers.

In second place were Helen Ancell, Val Cowie, John Lamont, and Anne Taylor.
Their non-playing captain was Pat Wiltshire.

In third place were Alison Amour, Jean Brodie, Peter Brodie, and Irene Carter.
Their non-playing captain was George Wiltshire.

2008–09 Calendar

This year's Events Calendar is available online. We hope you'll find the 'jump to any month' links on the page useful. The usual Calendar link is on our Events page.

Carlton Specsavers Handicap Congress

To view the results, or to view or download the hands played, click here.

Our first Congress at our new premises was a roaring success, with nearly 200 bridge players pitting their wits against each other in the Pairs and Teams events on Saturday 11 October. It was wonderful to see the Club so busy, and thanks to the support of Jennifer Ballantyne, Store Director of Specsavers North Bridge branch in Edinburgh, the top teams won generous prizes, and the three Pairs winners also won a free pair of spectacles EACH! Thanks again to Jennifer, who was on hand to present the prizes.

Sincere thanks also to Sheena Laing, our Congress Director, and her 'dream team' of Margaret Pemble—who scored the events with lightning speed, and co-TD Christine. They did a great job and made sure that despite a few initial hiccups beyond their control, everything went smoothly. Helen Ward, our Executive Catering Manager, laid on a magnificent two-course buffet supper at half-time which easily surpassed the description 'snack supper' and was excellent value for just £6!

Thanks to EVERYONE involved in the event behind the scenes, and of course to everyone who took part. We have some pictures of the event and the prizegiving on the results page. If you didn't take part this year, you'll see what a wonderful day you missed! Even the weather was kind to us!

Russell Cup—Another Successful Year

After 23 weeks of hard fought tournaments which began in April, the 2008 Russell Cup ended with the tournament on September 2nd. There were frequently ten or more tables throughout the summer.

In total, 134 (!) different players participated in at least one Round of the Russell this year; and 43 of those achieved 'qualifying' scores by playing in six or more Rounds—at most three of those scores with the same partner. This encourages different partnerships to be formed every week, which can be both challenging and exciting! There was a good turnout of Grand Masters and international players each week, with a few aspiring players who were keen to be tested in a challenging environment.

This year's winner was Liz McGowan with 62.39%. Iain Sime—who had been leading the race until week 20—was second with 61.89%. The Handicap race (for those ranked Scottish Master or below) was won by Jim McDowall with 55.88%; second was June Morrison with 55.34%.

Click here to see the full lists of prize winners, and the final rankings of all players. This year's leaderboard was maintained by Dee Harley, Julia Palmer, and beamed to this Web site by Cad Delworth. Sincere thanks also to Iain Sime, who directed the majority of this season's tournaments; and to Anne Perkins for her sterling and accurate work with the scoring.

Learn Bridge In A Day—A Great Day!

Thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make our recent Learn Bridge In A Day event such a great success. Thanks also to our members' great work in publicising the event in advance.

At the time of writing, we believe that thirty-four pairs were planning to attend. We will post more details here later. We also hope that all of you who attended enjoyed the day. If the day has left you wanting more, why not come to our new session of Beginners Class with Elizabeth Peckham? Click the link to find out more, and we hope to welcome some if not all of you back to the Carlton in future!

New Premises

The Carlton has MOVED to its new home at 36B Warriston Gardens in Goldenacre. Our sincere thanks to the many members who helped with the move—you know who you are!

Below is an interactive street map to help you plan routes to our new clubhouse.

The clubhouse door is locked electrically, and needs a small 'fob' key to open it. To open the door, wave your fob over the 'key' plate on the right-hand wall; you will hear a beep, the green light on the plate will light up, and the door will unlock briefly. Every member has been allocated a personal fob: if you have not yet picked yours up, please contact Jane Miller as soon as possible to do so. The fob does not need any batteries and will not affect your bank or credit cards. We suggest you put your fob on your keyring so you never forget to bring it to the Club!

PLEASE ALWAYS make sure the door is CLOSED after you enter or leave. The door does NOT close automatically.

NOTE: When you leave the Club, you MUST press the DOOR RELEASE switch to open the door. You cannot open the door using the handle!

For those of you who have not yet been there, here is the floor plan of our new clubhouse. The entrance door is at the bottom left, and WCs are shown with a blue background.

ScoreBridge: All Scorers/TDs Please Note!

Generally, ScoreBridge (our new scoring program) is working well. However, a few points have arisen lately, so we ask ALL scorers and TDs to note the following points:

Although we can (and do!) sort out these problems when we see them, it's easier for all concerned if the problems can be prevented at source.

An updated version of our Beginner's Guide to ScoreBridge, incorporating all the above points, is being prepared and will be available for download soon.
