As a courtesy to other players and to our hard-working Tournament Directors, please allow enough time to be seated and ready for play no later than TEN minutes before the start time at ALL events.

General Information

The Carlton is affiliated to the Scottish Bridge Union (SBU), and we award SBU Master Points at all Club events. Table money is £3.50 each for members; £5.00 for guests.

Please note that guests may not visit the Club more often than four times in any calendar month; and ALL guests MUST be signed in by a current member (to comply with licensing laws).

No-one To Play With?

If you turn up 'on spec' at the Club in the hope of finding someone to pair up with, you WILL go home disappointed, and without a game. If you don't have a partner, please call us in advance and we will try to find a partner for you; but we can't guarantee to find someone, so the more notice you can give us, the better.

Visitors

Non-members are welcome to play in 'regular' Carlton tournaments as visitors. Table money for non-members is £5.00 per session. As a visitor, you may play in up to four events per calendar month; if you do this regularly, you will be encouraged and expected to apply for membership of the Carlton.

Just Learning?

We run tournaments and classes specifically for those of you who are learning—or want to learn—the stimulating and challenging game of duplicate contract bridge.

Try our monthly 'Novices and Regulars' tournament on Tuesday nights, where we will partner you with an experienced Club player to ease you in to the atmosphere of a tournament in the company of a friendly, knowledgeable player. Please call the Club if you would like us to book you a place at next month's tournament! Please note that this event has moved from Friday to the last TUESDAY of each month.

There is also our unique Sutherland Quaich (formerly the Chalmers Trophy), which allows novices to experience the fun and thrill of a team-of-four bridge match, but with one experienced player in the team.

Club Competitions

We run a number of competitions and 'special' events during the bridge season. Entry to most of these events is limited to Club members. Most of these events are annual competitions, and most are run over several weeks.

District And National Events

During the bridge season, the Carlton hosts heats and finals of SBU Eastern District, SBU National, and even occasional International competitions. At some of these events, we use the VuGraph system to give you a live 'ringside seat,' with running commentary by bridge experts and writers.

Team Events

The Carlton is 'home' to several SBU Eastern District league teams who play their 'home' fixtures at the Club. We are always willing—subject to availability—to provide a card room for league team matches.
Please call the Club if you wish to make a booking.

The Harrower Cup is our annual Club teams-of-four competition for members of District Master rank or below. All you need to take part is four members (ideally, six people: to cover holidays etc.), and it's a great introduction to team play.
