The competitions and events below are run annually. Details and entry forms are posted on the Club's notice boards a few weeks before each event.
Held in memory of Bill Brown, a founder and long-serving member of the Carlton, entry to this event is limited to pairs where both players are at least sixty years of age.
The Bill Brown is held on a Monday night in March or April.
Our annual Congress whichoffers worthwhile cash prizes to the event's winners.
In the afternoon, we hold three Pairs events for players of all abilities: No Fears for beginners, Next Steps for novices, and an open handicap Congress Pairs. In the evening, we hold a handicap teams-of-four competition. All events are open to non-SBU registered players.
Click the heading above or the link below to read the full details of this event.
The Carlton Handicap Congress is held on a Saturday in October.
Need we say more? Our annual challenge match against Edinburgh's 'other club' takes place each May on a mutually suitable evening.
The venue for this event alternates annually between the Carlton and Melville Clubs.
See Sutherland Quaich.
This event is run as a combined Open and Handicap event. The Club Cup is awarded to the Open winners, and the Harry Stein Trophy is awarded to the Handicap winners.
The Club Cup is run in four monthly heats, held on Monday nights, starting in October. Entrants must play in at least THREE of the four heats for their scores to count.
A ten week race for Master Points, where the two players amassing the highest total number of Master Points are the winners.
All Thursday evening pairs tournament results starting in January, and for the following ten weeks or so, automatically count towards the Dennis Wallace.
The Harrower Cup honours the memory of Peter Harrower, a long-standing and well-loved member of the Carlton. The Harrower is a 'no fears' teams-of-four league for players at or below the rank of District Master, which ensures you will not be 'steamrollered' by teams of national-class players. Each team plays at least one 24-board match against each of the other teams, with match scores converted to VPs and teams ranked in a league table.
The Harrower Cup starts in the autumn (usually October), and is run on alternate Tuesday evenings for as many weeks as necessary to complete the fixtures.
The popular annual event where all-female pairs compete against all-male pairs. At the end of the evening, the Ladies' total aggregate score is compared to the Gents' total aggregate score to determine the 'better' sex.
The Ladies vs. Gentlemen contest is held in the spring, usually on a Wednesday evening in March.
This trophy is awarded annually to the Carlton member who wins the highest number of Master Points at the regular Wednesday night aggregate tournament between the beginning of June and the end of April the next year.
Every member who plays in any Wednesday tournament is automatically entered into this competition.
The Club's annual competition for mixed pairs (one female, one male!).
The Min Thomas is held on two Tuesday evenings in January.
The annual Christmas party is held a few days before the Carlton closes for the Christmas period, and the Hallowe'en party is held as close as possible to October 31st (subject to other events).
The ticket price for each event includes a buffet as well as table money for the evening's pairs tournament.
The Porteous Cup is the annual championship event for teams of four.
The Porteous is held on four Tuesdays in the spring, alternating with rounds of the Harrower Cup, so Harrower teams can take part in both events.
The Russell Cup is an open competition where the average of a player's best six scores (no more than three with any single partner) determines the winner.
The Russell Cup is held on most Tuesdays between April and September; please note that the start time for all Russell Cup rounds is 6.45 pm.
The Sutherland Quaich is a teams tournament where three members of each team are bridge novices, and one member is an experienced player.
The Sutherland Quaich is held in October.
The Wendy Gray is the Carlton's only Swiss Teams event. Teams of four play against each other and there are usually six matches of eight boards each.
Like all Swiss events, the first round draw is random but fixtures for succeeding rounds are in RANKING order. This means that after the first round or two, teams are playing teams of similar ability.
The Wendy Gray is held on two consecutive Thursdays in April. Note that NO other events will be held on these two evenings.
