New Players Events

The Carlton has extended its programme of events for beginners and novice players, to offer you the opportunity to play on different nights and during the day.

All the events below are for beginners and novices, who will play fewer boards than standard Carlton tournaments, in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere. If you are a new or inexperienced player, these events are aimed at YOU, giving you some practice; and we hope that when you feel ready to play at the regular pace, you will progress to the regular Carlton tournaments.

Absolute beginners are normally ready to play in New Players events after completing their first twenty lessons, but are welcome at any time.

We strongly suggest that you arrange a partner for these games; and also that you actively arrange games with the other beginners you meet at the tournaments. We will try to help you arrange partners if needed (but please let us know at least a week beforehand).

As a courtesy to the other players (and to our hard-working Tournament Directors!), please allow enough time to be seated and ready for play no later than TEN minutes before the start time stated below.

Tuesday Evenings: TEAMS at 7.00 pm
Harrower Cup (20 boards)

every second Tuesday, from 5 October 2010
£4.00 per session

The Harrower is an open Carlton event for teams, and entry is restricted to Local Masters and below.

Prizes will be awarded to the best teams at the end of the competition.

Tuesday Evenings: PAIRS at 7.00 pm
New Players Tournament


Director: Hasan Choudhury

every second Tuesday, from 12 October 2010
(alternating with the Harrower Cup, see above)
£4.00 per session

Scoring may be either aggregate or match-pointed. Pre-dealt boards (with printouts) will be an option.

Tuesday Evenings: PAIRS at 7.00 pm
Novices and Regulars Competition


Director: June Morrison

the LAST Tuesday of each month
£3.50 per session

Play a game with an experienced Carlton player as your partner.

Each player's best three scores will be added together at the end of the competition to decide the winners.
Prizes will be awarded to the best Novices and the best Regulars.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS EVENT WILL START AGAIN IN THE NEW YEAR (when the Harrower Cup is complete),
PROBABLY IN FEBRUARY OR MARCH.
When we have the details, we will update this page.

Friday Evenings: PAIRS at 7.00 pm
Beginners Tournament (approximately 14–16 boards)

the LAST Friday of each month
£4.00 per session

There will be 12 pre-dealt boards (with commentary), but we play 14–16 boards depending on numbers.

Prizes of chocolates or wine will be awarded for the best scores.
